ABOUT US

The South Australia Ski Club was founded to “promote the enjoyment of skiing”, in an era when accessing the snow in Australia was challenging. Today skiing and snow holidays have changed. Access to the mountains, ski schools, equipment and accommodation have all greatly improved. It is very easy for people to book package ski trips and do their own thing. The Club, however, offers much more than a ‘packaged trip’. It provides enduring friendships with people who have a shared passion for the mountains, snow, and skiing. It is an opportunity to learn new things, to travel to familiar and new mountain areas, and to enjoy shared experiences throughout the year.
The Club does not have its own ski lodges, but has access to private lodges in Victoria and elsewhere, which are normally cheaper than commercial chalets, especially considering group discounts. In a normal year at least two annual ski trips are arranged for members to resorts such as Mount Buller, Hotham and Falls Creek and to an overseas destination. The Club holds several meetings over the year; most of these are short and informal, with the Annual General Meeting a more formal affair. Meetings provide the opportunity to plan upcoming trips and social events, and to exchange information about ski resorts, snow conditions, and equipment. The Club has a long tradition of active participation from its members. New members are always welcome to continue this tradition.

CLUB HISTORY

The South Australian Ski Club was formed in September 1952 by a small group of local  Adelaide skiers who had a passion for snow and the sport of skiing. In those days it was difficult to ski in Australia. The mountains of Victoria and New South Wales were hard to get to, ski facilities and equipment were primitive, and without ski schools, learning to ski was almost impossible. The Club provided ways for members to access the snow, be accommodated in comfortable shared lodges and to enjoy the support and company of likeminded others.

This tradition of camaraderie, support, and sharing the love of skiing continues today. The Club organises several ski trips throughout the year and also hosts social events including barbeques, photo nights, bush walks, a mid-winter brunch and the traditional end of year dinner.
